faq & rules.

THE RULES

☠ Be kind. Respect each other's boundaries when RPing, especially when it comes to 18+ material.

☠ Be active. Activity checks are a requirement, and players must reply to it whenever they can. Should a player not be able to reply in a timely manner, a player may take a strike, which comes with penalties. See the FAQ for further details.

☠ Don't godmod. No one enjoys the company of a power-gamer. Please don't do this.

☠ Don't play with yourself. Playercest. We mean playercest, not the other thing.

☠ Be communicative. If there are problems arising between you and another player, please communicate with them respectfully about this. See the first rule.

☠ Talk to the mods. Given sufficient evidence, the mods reserve the right to remove and/or ban any players that have a history of bad rp behavior.

☠ Warn for content. Given the setting and premise of the game, mature content can't be entirely avoided. Make sure to warn for triggering material in your posts, to ensure that everyone has a good time.

THE FAQ

☠ ABOUT THE GAME.

☠ What is Warner Isle all about?
Warner Isle is an 18+ game set in a prison on an island surrounded by nothing but water as far as the eye can see. The game itself operates loosely on sci-fi and horror tropes to pin the setting down, but generally speaking, the characters that end up in Warner Isle stay on Warner Isle — whether or not they want to.

☠ So is the game sci-fi or horror?
Ideally, neither! The primary setting of the game is that it's on a prison, and characters get to explore exactly what that means for themselves. However, to dress up the setting and to give IC explanations for how characters can't just fly or swim away (in some cases literally) from the prison, certain elements from the sci-fi and horror genre have been adopted.

The sci-fi aspects are most prominent in the PERSONAL EFFECTS page, while the horror aspects will reveal themselves over time through entirely opt-in events.

☠ So what does my character do in this game, exactly?
The basic premise of Warner Isle is that your character has been selected to serve their time in the penitentiary, to atone for their past mistakes in life. How they got to the prison is a mystery; this may or may not be resolved ICly during the course of the game. Characters are given the option to serve out their time naturally, or to speed it up via "atonements", which will shave hours, days, or even years off their sentence.

☠ What are these atonements?
Atonements in the game's context are actions done by your character to earn additional good behavior from the penitentiary. Atonements can range from small deeds like making lanterns for the sick, or big deeds such as saving someone's life - or taking it, as one might have to do.

☠ Wait, what?
This is where the horror part of the tropes come in! On Warner Isle, good behavior isn't always good behavior.

☠ How would my character be brought into the game?
They were knocked out in their canon universe, and upon waking up they will find that they're on the ship SANTA MARIA, on the way to Warner Isle. Their personal effects will have been removed from them, leaving them only with their clothes. They will also be collared and cuffed, and any powers or special abilities they possess will no longer be active. After that, they will be brought to the warden, where they'll get stripped and embedded with a tracking chip.

More details on the technology aspect of their arrival can be found at the PERSONAL EFFECTS page.

☠ My character doesn't have a lot to atone for, but I would like to bring them to Warner Isle. Is there a workaround for that?
Yes! If there's a canon moment where your character has felt intense guilt (or just some form of guilt), they can be taken from that canon point and brought to the isle. The warden will simply inform them that they are now ready to atone for their mistakes under the warden's watchful eye.

☠ Is the warden an NPC?
Yes, if only in the sense that they'll routinely appear on the game logs to announce the atonements available for the characters to participate in. They can be reached through a character inbox HERE for whatever reason (IC complaints are definitely welcome), but please limit threads to once a month per character if possible. Threads with the NPC do not count for AC.

☠ Is interacting with the warden necessary to gain plot?
Not at all! Shooting the mods a PM or commenting to the OOC event plotting posts should be enough.

☠ Is there a network?
Not at the moment, no! All interactions are in person or through phonecalls (which are ICly monitored).

☠ APPLICATIONS & ACTIVITY.

☠ What characters can be brought to Warner Isle?
Canon characters, canon AU characters, and original characters. Fictionalized versions of real people can be apped as long as they are distinctly removed from the historical identity of the person (e.g. zombie hunter Jane Austen). CRAUs and fandom AUs aren't currently allowed.

☠ Would my character be humanized/given a different body?
They will be given a humanoid body if they're not already humanoid, but otherwise, characters get to keep the bodies they came with. This applies for android and alien characters as well.

☠ How many characters can I play in the game?
Each player has a limit of two characters. They may app two characters per round as well. Should a player want to apply for a third character, proof of activity from the previous two months will be required.

☠ How soon from the release of canon material can I app a character?
For characters from newly released canon, please refrain from applying for the first 30 days after the date of release. This applies across the board, and for canon updates as well.

☠ My character's already dead in their canon. Can I still app?
Yes! Characters may be brought in to Warner Isle from the moment of their death. Enjoy the unconventional afterlife!

☠ Is there a character age limit?
Due to the mature rating of the game, characters need to be at least 18 years old to be apped. Exceptions to this are on a case-by-case basis, so please contact us through comments on the FAQ or through PM.

Generally speaking, if a character presents as a non-human adult in terms of physical and emotional maturity, and is treated as an adult in the canon (e.g. android and artificial human/non-human characters), they would have a higher chance of being an exception. Outside of those circumstances, characters who are are shy of 18 years old at the desired canon point would still not be appable.

If in doubt about where a character falls under, please contact us directly.

☠ Are powers capped? What about weapons?
Yes, all powers are capped. Weapons are confiscated upon arrival and characters are likely not to get them back for a while. Characters who rely on magic or powers to survive may be given exceptions, but this is also on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us at any time!

☠ What's the game's activity check like?
10 in-person tags (spread over no more than 2 threads)
20 phone call tags (spread over no more than 2 threads)
5 in-person tags (1 thread) and 10 phone call tags (1 thread)

☠ I haven't met the activity requirements and AC's due, what do I do?
Players can take a strike once every three months without penalty. Players who choose to take more than strike in three months will be asked to drop a character. They won't be allowed to app the same character in the following app round as well.

☠ I'm on hiatus and can't post to the AC. Do I have a penalty?
Not at all! However, if we notice there's a pattern to a player's hiatuses versus their cleared activity, we may contact the player and ask them to consider dropping a character.

☠ Are there AC bonuses that we can claim for extra AC?
Yes! Item bonuses will be available through AC points, and there will be a list of items every activity check that players can claim for their characters. Each additional comment is equivalent to 1 AC point, and can be accumulated.

AC point summaries and item bonus claims must be submitted along with regular AC during the monthly AC period. Players on hiatus or taking a strike cannot claim AC bonuses, as they are not submitting regular AC.

☠ Will there be a warning list for AC?
No, there will not be. Activity check goes up every 1st of the month and runs until the 7th, (UTC). This will be regularly scheduled.

☠ OTHER INFORMATION.

☠ What are the game communities?
The game communities are [community profile] warnerisle (game logs), [community profile] cellblock (OOC community), and [community profile] gangway (test drive community). Warner Isle doesn't have a network community as of this moment.

☠ Is there a mandatory HMD (How's My Driving)?
While there's no game-wide HMD, players are required to have HMDs on their character journals. We leave it up to the player how to format their comment settings.

☠ The prison looks too nice. Why is that?
ICly, Warner Isle Penitentiary aims to make each inmate's stay as comfortable as possible, leaving the torment up for their atonements. OOCly, we felt it prudent to avoid actual prison photos out of respect.

☠ I have a question that wasn't answered here.
